4th of July

I just love the 4th of July!  It’s such a fun holiday.  Yes, it’s our country’s celebration of independence, but it’s also a great excuse to secure some new fashion!  My family’s day of festivities begins at 11am with the Grandville 4th of July community parade which we attend with our friends the Segards.  This is actually our 10th anniversary of attending the parade together. It’s such wonderful, wholesome family fun.  One thing that my friend Tina taught me early on,  is that you only show up at the parade with your entire family decked out from head to toe in red, white and blue. (The first year we went with the Segards, our attire was multicolored. Tina was not pleased….and the group picture of our families that year is not nearly as cute as the other years. Hey, what can I say, we didn’t know, but we did learn!)  So every year a shopping excursion is needed to secure patriotic attire for the entire family.  Fortunately, when it comes to what I will wear, I can take a lap in the store the morning before (as I did this morning) and come up with an adorable ensemble that Tina will be proud of!  This year I will be sporting a red Skinny Tee layered with a blue Michael Stars dress that has a white pin stripe running through it and some, oh so darling, red Cole Haan sandals.  And if I must confess, I couldn’t help myself, I also splurged on a pair of Dolce & Gabana sunglasses.  (You know how sunny it’s going to be!) Now after our parade going, we are off to my parent’s house on Lake Michigan for a day at the beach, a shrimp boil (another favorite of mine) and evening fireworks. For me, this is a perfect holiday! Parade + Lake Michigan + Family & Friends = Happiness!

Enjoy your 4th!  And don’t forget to wear your red, white and blue!

Spring Shoes & Splints

I’m depressed. How’s that for an attention getter? Just look at all of these beautiful shoes that we have in store this spring….one would think I would be over the moon about all of the possibilities for new shoe obtainment for my closet.  Which would normally be the case, but I have a little problem.  I sprained my ankle….its official.  Over spring break I had a running  accident and landed in a heap on the ground with a right ankle issue and skinned knees, shoulder and hands.  Not necessarily a fashionable fall, I must admit.  I refrained from seeing a doctor and instead spent spring break poolside with a bag of ice, Advil and margaritas (I know most of you know this story already, but I need to share with the rest of the readers).  So, last week the swelling was down (not all the way, but manageable) and I decided it was time to start wearing spring shoes with heels….so I did.  And guess what, my healing progress plateaued.  Ugh!  Of course, it didn’t help when I went to Ann Arbor this weekend and concluded my Saturday evening with dancing (When is the last time you went dancing?  Seems like forever for me, so when the band is playing all your favorite music and your girlfriends say, “Hey let’s dance!”, you take some Advil and dance….even with a bum ankle).  Yesterday, however, I was in urgent care getting my ankle examined….yes, I went backwards in my healing (imagine that!).    Today, I am in an air splint with my tennis shoes on….for the next 7-10 days.  My spring shoe obtainment is on hold….thus, my disappointed mood.   That brings me to you….I may not be able to secure new shoes right now, but I can live vicariously through you and your shoe purchases….and I know I will be just as happy seeing my friends wearing fabulous new shoes as I would if they were on my own feet!  We have the best shoe assortment this spring from your favorites:  Tory Burch, Elie Tahari, Sam Edelman, Cole Haan, Stuart Weitzman, Juicy Couture, Donald Pliner, Aquatalia, Bettye Muler, Kors Michael Kors and Vince Camuto Signature.  So, stop in and let us assist you in selecting a fabulous new pair (or two) of shoes for this season!

When To Say Goodby

Thanks to everyone who read my last blog post about what to wear to a hockey game.  I have had several readers inquire about my tried and true “puffy coat” and ask, “Ok, what is the rest of the story?”  Alright, I’m ready to share and I think you will all be able to relate this post to a fashion item in your closet.  Ok, it all started in 2007.  We had a Cole Haan outerwear trunk show and there was this beautiful winter white long puffy coat that I laid eyes on…and wrote an order for…thinking, of course, it would be perfect for our cold Michigan winters, enduring the cold ice arenas that I frequent for my sons’ hockey games and my trips to New York during the winter months.  Well, the coat arrived and it was everything I hoped it would be and I became very attached.  And I was still attached the next year and the year after that and….last year my team said, “Enough!  The puffy coat has to go!”    Well, I couldn’t disagree.  All I could think of was sitting at the Thanksgiving table with my children when they’re in their 30’s and them making fun of me, “Mom,  remember that white puffy coat that you had….it’s like Groundhog Day with photos.  Here’s Mom in 2007 with her white puffy coat.  Here’s Mom in 2008 with her white puffy coat.  Oh, here she is again in 2009….with her white puffy coat. 2010 – same coat.”  Can you relate….the thought of it is like waking up from a bad dream in a cold sweat.  So, this year I decided….I’m going to donate it.  Our seamstress, Huyen, came to work and said her sister was visiting from Vietnam, would be staying the winter and she asked if anyone had warm clothes that they would be willing to give her.  Perfect – I will give her my puffy coat – it will be to a good home and it will force me to buy a new coat.  So, I brought the coat to Huyen….who then brought the coat home….and then returned it the next day….she says it wasn’t the right size….could it really be because it was a little worn and discolored??? Ok, a lot worn and even when it’s been washed it looks dirty (Yes, I’ve been wearing it  these past few years in this condition-yikes!).  I can’t be sure, but it did inspire me to purchase a new coat…black this time with a cute fur collar.  Why did I wait all this time to get a new coat???  I love my new coat!!!  And, I’ve received lots of compliments for trading in the other (I know my friends are giving me positive reinforcement so this never happens again).  Tonight, I want you to look through your closet.  You know you have things that it’s time to part with….do not put it off!!!  Retiring your favorites is like giving up your snuggly when you’re a toddler (and we all know how tattered and worn those snugglies were), but it’s ok in the end….and when it comes to fashion….giving up those pieces gives you a fabulous opportunity to get great new items that keep you hip and current!

Fun in New York City!

Deb Clark and I had a blast in New York last week!  We were in the city for the fall 2010 shoe market and couldn’t resist having a little fun.  Pictured above is me modeling an animal print sleeping mask at White + Warren, Deb in the Cole Haan lobby – yes, that is a rose in her mouth!!! – , and a picture of the Fresh store on 3rd avenue @ 79th.  We had jam packed days of viewing beautiful merchandise!  As you might already know from our cosmetic mailer that just went out…Fresh is arriving in our store this month!  We met over at one of the beautiful Fresh stores for an overview of this wonderful bath and body line from one of their top educators.    It was another successful trip!

It’s Freezing Outside!

How cold can you go?  I’m driving to work today and the temperature reading is a whopping 14 degrees.  “Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr,” is all I can say.  I grew up in Northern Minnesota and at 18 I moved South….to Michigan.  Days like these make me think I should have kept going!  But, I remind myself, I have to look at the positive…the glass half full kinda thing.  If we didn’t have these nice cold winters, we couldn’t have our fabulous winter fashion that we have come to adore.  I love my Cole Haan puffy coat, Australia Luxe Collective boots, cute Echo gloves with a bow on the wrist…and I can’t forget my super cool suede Kooba handbag. Those Southern belles with their year round capris can only dream of our winter fashion!  So bring on the cold – get your great coats & boots out – it’s time to enjoy this weather….fashionably!

Another Great Trip to NYC!

Picture 004

We were in NYC last week checking out resort collections for delivery October – December.  Above is a picture of me at the Cole Haan showroom.  If you’re looking at beautiful merchandise, you might as well have some fun with it.  And, of course, I can be a big ham if need be!  Also, double top secret, but I am going to share with you…we are bringing 3.1 Phillip Lim into our store starting in November.  You’re going to love it!  The rest of our buy will have to remain under wraps so that you have some surprises when you come to see us!

Greetings from Florida!

Thank goodness that my children have spring break! It makes for a wonderful reason to go to Florida to enjoy warmth and sunshine! It was so easy to pack my suitcase….Michael Stars t-shirts, G-1 shorts, J Brand boyfriend jeans, Vince boyfriend T’s, two cute ensembles from Alice + Oliva and capris from Vineyard Vines. Shoes that made the trip consisted of sandels from Stuart Weitzman, Cole Haan and Donald Pliner. Yes, it is true, everything – don’t forget accessories and make-up- came from Leigh’s. I am proof that Leigh’s can be your one stop shopping experience! Hope to see you next week when I get back.
