Designer Sightings

Just back from market in NYC and had to share our designer sightings!  First, we met the iconic Carolina Herrera.  Yes, she looks like she walked out of a magazine….so elegant and beautiful. I have to admit I was a little starstruck! Her classic collection with a modern twist was just as stunning for resort ’15 as it is every season. Fun facts about Ms. Herrera: She started her clothing line at the suggestion of her friend Diana Vreeland, the then Editor-in-Chief of Vogue. And, I can hardly believe this, she is 75 years old…she doesn’t look anywhere near this age….even in person.
Then on our next day, Deb and I had an appointment at Wes Gordon and there he was. How fun was it to walk in his showroom and get a chance to meet him after we both just read an article about him in Vogue?! His collection was fabulous (as was he)…infusing luxury and timeless sophistication with a young, modern edge. Fun fact: He worked with both Oscar and Tom Ford before launching his own collection in 2009.

Last year I thought it was the best that it could be and then….I watched this year’s Couture for a Cure in amazement as it once again surpassed last year’s bar (which was set very high)!  We had a record crowd of 500+.  We raised more money than ever before (stay tuned for exact numbers) for the cutting edge research and science education that occurs at the Van Andel Institute.  And, the energy and buzz in the room was extraordinary as our models took the runway with fall fashion that we have in store (styled to perfection thanks to our runway stylist extraordinaire, Patrick Plank).  The applause, the pictures being snapped (by professional photographers as well as those attending), the complete engagement of our audience made for an event that was….phenomenal!  I am so very proud of my team and each person’s contributions.  To put together a show of that caliber is definitely a collaboration of many talented individuals.  A special shout out to our creative genius Patrick Plank…wow, Patrick, you did it again!  Cynthia Rose…kudos to you for being our guest designer and showcasing your holiday ’13 and spring ’14 collections for the second part of our runway show.  Thanks to the team at the Van Andel Institute; you are wonderful to partner with and always committed to excellence.  Finally, a huge thank you to everyone who attended….we are appreciative of the support you show to our event.  We are honored that we can provide the “fun” that inspires you to give to such a worthwhile organization as VAI.  We look forward to seeing you next year for our 9th annual Couture for a Cure!

Back From The Big Apple

Pic 1: Patrick Plank, Rebecca Wierda and Deb Wurfel take a moment in Central Park before one of the runway shows.  Pic 2:  Douglas Hannant spring ’13 runway presentation.  His inspiration for the season: ”A Daydream.”  Young, innocent, and lost in a field of lovely flowers.  Imagery of budding flowers was projected on the screens as the models walked the runway; truly stunning!  Pic 3:  Carolina Herrera showroom.  This was one of our favorite gowns that we viewed; it was a piece of modern art!  Pic 4:  After a full day of showroom appointments, we treated ourselves to a wonderful dinner at Bell, Book & Candle located in the West Village.  This farm to table restaurant has a roof-top garden that inspires their daily menu offering:  www.bbandcnyc.com.  Just a block away is another recommendation we received and I want to pass on to you – Rosemary’s:  www.rosemarysnyc.com.  You’ll love either one of them, so put them on your list for next time you’re in NYC.

We had an amazing trip to New York last week!  I just love being in The Big Apple during Fashion Week!  There’s so much energy; the runway shows are inspiring.  Then to see the trends and direction for spring ’13 fashion……well, it makes me think we’re all  going to need a bigger closet!
